This research consisted of comparisons of the healing touch approach in Longevitology Group I),life review therapy in group counseling Group II) and a control group with no participation in these two programs or any other Group III). The purpose of this study was to determine which group earned the highest scores in life satisfaction in these three groups of elderly nursing home residents. This study used a post-test experimental design and cross-group comparison of the two treatments with a control group. Participants in this study included 36 elderly nursing home residents in southern Taiwan who were randomly assigned to two treatment groups and a control group. Each group was comprised of 12 elderly residents with a total of six classes for a week in the Longevitology program and six once-weekly sessions in group counseling. Both treatments included meetings totaling 12 hours. Qualified therapists led treatment groups, and they also utilized treatment manuals in the group. The Life Satisfaction in the Elderly Scale in Chinese Version and demographic information were administered after treatments were completed. Data was analyzed by means of one-way ANOVA to test hypothesis. The result of this study indicated no significant differences among the three groups in the life satisfaction of elderly nursing home residents. Demographic variables were added for each experimental group and a control group, and then the two-way ANOVA was used to analyze the data. The results of the two-way ANOVA indicated elderly residents over 85 years of age in the two treatment groups showed higher scores on life satisfaction. In future research,it would beneficial to provide an experimental design with a pretest and posttest. More research is needed to employ a pre-screening questionnaire to discover nursing home residents needs, and compare similar treatment groups to find out which group can increase life satisfaction for residents. A qualified instructor will need for Longevitology, and certified counselors will require leading counseling groups. Researchers must adhere to treatment manuals in this study if they have Longevitology and life review therapy in their research. Moreover,a method to inspire family members to participate in the programs with their elderly nursing home relatives should be undertaken. Finally, individual counseling is needed in order to help solve elderly residents unfinished business, and discover the meaning of their lives after group counseling. In conclusion, elderly residents may feel happier during the time they participated in the activities and programs in the nursing home. However, they still would need to live in the nursing home whether they wanted to stay there or not after competing treatments. Future researcher must focus on residents individual values, and provided a resident centered intervention approach for elderly residents in nursing homes.
